The Harry Potter series is definitely under the genre of Fantasy, though there’s a fair bit of romance in it. As the series progressed, Harry had some encounters with romance with Cho Chang as well as Ginny Weasley, his best friend’s sister. Ginny also had a few boyfriends in her time at Hogwarts including Dean Thomas.

While both Harry and Ginny, before ending up together, seemed to have played the field, there were a few potential matches for Ginny that would have been better suited for her. Here are 10 people Ginny should have been with that aren’t Harry.

Neville Longbottom

Neville Longbottom is in Gryffindor in the same year as Harry, Ron, and Hermione. In year 4, during The Goblet Of Fire, Neville actually took Ginny to the Yule Ball while Harry and Ron took the Patil twins. There are scenes, before the dance, of Neville practicing his dance moves which are very endearing and hints that he’s excited for his date with Ginny.

There are many fan fictions of what Ginny and Neville’s relationship would be like if she wasn’t with Harry, so this pair has definitely crossed the minds of fans as well.

Oliver Wood

Ginny and Oliver Wood would have been a great pair. Oliver Wood was a quidditch captain for the Gryffindor team. Ginny was a great Quidditch player and also played for the Gryffindor team, eventually moving on to play professionally later in life.

The two not only share their love for Quidditch but they’re both sarcastic in their style of humor as well. While the two did not cross paths at Hogwarts due to age difference, these similarities in passion and determination would have allowed them to flourish if they met post-Hogwarts.

Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood was a Ravenclaw student at Hogwarts. She was introduced through her connection to Harry because they both had the ability to see Thestrals, which are only visible to those who have seen death.

Luna was in the same year as Ginny. Although in different houses, the two crossed paths a couple of times. Luna is quirky and honest while Ginny is strong-minded and ambitious and these characteristics would complement one another. Luna and Ginny are the stars of many fan-made fiction spin-offs.

Dean Thomas

Dean Thomas and Ginny in fact dated for a bit. Dean was known to be a good friend of Harry’s and was in Gryffindor as well. Dean was a likable person who was always ready to help. From the novels, it seemed as though the relationship was one-sided and Dean had more feelings for Ginny than she could reciprocate.

Although, Ginny was younger than Dean at the time, which could have been factored in their break-up. Given time to mature, Dean and Ginny’s relationship could have been stronger than ever.

Hermione Granger

Hermione and Ginny spent a lot of time together because of Hermione’s close friendship with Ron. The two were close and when Hermione spent time at the burrow, she hung out with Ginny. Ginny is the only girl amongst boys and found trust in Hermione who was an older female figure in her life.

This relationship could’ve easily been spun into something more, had the series more openly explored different sexualities and partners. Ginny and Hermione were probably the easiest relationship to develop had LGBTQ couples been more present.

Seamus Finnigan

Seamus and Dean were close friends throughout the series, and even though Ginny and Dean have history, she could have easily ended up with the best friend. Seamus is known for blowing things up. He’s experimental and funny, always bringing humor into the series.

Seamus would have gotten along with the Weasley family, especially with the twins, sharing their love for chaos. With Ginny being the more logical one of the Weasley siblings, Seamus’ spunky personality would have kept Ginny on her toes.

Cedric Diggory

Cedric Diggory, gone too soon, loved by many. Cedric was introduced in The Goblet Of Fire and participated in the TriWizard tournament alongside Harry and others. He was a good sport throughout the competition, giving Harry a hint on one of the tasks. This showed us Cedric’s honesty and willingness to help given the opportunity to.

His loyalty reminds us of Ginny as well as his poise, composure, and ambition. The two would have motivated each other to do great things and would have probably been a power couple. Sadly, Cedric died in the final task of the TriWizard tournament at the hands of Lord Voldemort.

Draco Malfoy

Draco Malfoy, although seen as a villain is simply a troubled boy growing up in a negative home environment. He has a particular distaste for the Weasley family, although some may see this as envy. Given Draco’s home situation where his parents are both death eaters, seeing a close-knit family like the Weasley has him wishing for the same.

Draco would have appreciated the love that the Weasleys could have offered him. Ginny’s strong mind and attitude could have challenged Draco who seemed to always think he was right.

Angelina Johnson

Angelina Johnson was on the quidditch team and dated Fred Weasley, Ginny’s older brother. Angelina was known to be talented on the quidditch field as well as very pretty. The two girls share a passion for quidditch, much like Ginny and Oliver Wood do.

Although, Angelina is soft in nature and known to be very sweet which would be nice in contrast to Ginny’s independent and confident character. In the end, Angelina married the other twin George, keeping her in the Weasley family.

Colin Creevey

Colin Creevey started off in the series as Harry Potter-obsessed the first year. Colin later became somewhat of a Hogwarts journalist, photographing events and students over the years. Colin was always a Harry supporter and joined Dumbledore’s Army, which Ginny was also a member of.

Colin seemed to have similar values to Ginny and supported many of the things she did such as Dumbledore’s Army, Harry’s claims about Voldemort, and quidditch. Colin, much like Ginny, was always watching out for the golden trio.
