The relationships in Harry Potter might not be the focus of the series, but they do play a role. As Harry gets older and into his late teens, the romantic relationships between his peers start to feature more in the story. Also, some of the romantic relationships between adults play an important role in the plot of the books.

While every fan has their favorite characters and relationships, there were some couples that fans weren’t a fan of overall. On the other hand, there were also couples that got together that fans wish never had.

Wish Had: Luna Lovegood and Ginny Weasley

There are many popular pairings in the Harry Potter fan community that feature LGBT couples. Given that there is very little LGBT representation in the series, and the only relationship wasn’t actually discussed in the book, many fans are looking to see more of this representation.

While Luna and Ginny aren’t two people we see interact often, they do seem to get along well. They would be an interesting couple and could have at least been good friends. But, since the series is from Harry’s point of view, we don’t see a lot of side characters.

Wish Hadn’t: Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks

One of the strangest pairings in the series is Remus and Tonks. These two didn’t seem evenly matched at all, and their relationship seemed to come out of nowhere.

And, these relationships also seemed to bring the worst out of both of them. The stress of everything even made Tonks unable at times to change her appearance, and Lupin’s issues related to being a werewolf caused him to try to abandon his wife and child. Overall, this relationship made these two characters less interesting and endearing.

Wish Had: Sirius Black and Remus Lupin

While many fans questioned why Tonks and Lupin got together, many of those same fans also thought that Lupin would be better with Sirius. These two clearly have a deep bond of friendship and care for each other.

After Sirius is proven to be innocent, they are still close friends. This is one of the most popular fandom pairings from the Harry Potter series, and it would have been a great way to include LGBT representation.

Wish Hadn’t: Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley

While Ron and Hermione might be one of the main relationships from the series, it’s also one that is rather contested. Many fans felt they would be horrible together and that their relationship was more of just a young crush that wouldn’t last.

Even J.K. Rowling admitted that they wouldn’t have been that good together. There are fans who really like this couple, but it’s clear that they probably wouldn’t have always gotten along. It’s hard for many fans to imagine them making things work in the long run.

Wish Had: Harry Potter and Hermione Granger

While Hermione and Ron are the romantic couple that came out of the friendship trio, many fans think that Harry and Hermione would have been a better match.

While their friendship is also important and it’s nice to see a boy and girl be close without dating, temperament wise they are more suited. They might not be the most romantically attracted to one another, but they both have a lot more emotional intelligence than Ron does and generally get along better.

Wish Hadn’t: Harry Potter and Cho Chang

Harry and Ginny were a couple that made sense in many ways, but Harry’s relationship with Cho, on the other hand, didn’t go well at all. Harry clearly wasn’t mature enough at the time they started dating to handle Cho’s grief and emotions.

Cho also suddenly became much more jealous and dramatic than she had seemed before. While many fans agree that Cho deserved more of a character arc, these two also weren’t good together as a couple.

Wish Had: Neville Longbottom and Luna Lovegood

Neville and Luna seemed like they would have been a great match, so many fans were surprised when J.K. Rowling revealed that they both ended up marrying other people.

They both were gentle and caring souls who cared deeply about others. They could also relate to the fact that they had always been perceived as weird or uncool by their peers, and they both had unique but passionate interests. Many fans were disappointed they never dated.

Wish Hadn’t: Draco Malfoy and Pansy Parkinson

Draco and Pansy were shown to briefly date, but it was clear that they weren’t good together. Draco never really seemed that interested in Pansy while she was very obsessed with him.

While they didn’t get together in adulthood, to the relief of many fans, many fans still wanted Draco to date someone more interesting and for him to have a more complex romantic storyline. But, in the end, at least he grew out of this phase of his life.

Wish Had: Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy

One of the other most popular Harry Potter fandom ships is Draco and Harry. While these two were rivals throughout the entire series and as soon as they set foot in Hogwarts, many people felt this would have made for an interesting dynamic and that their level of obsessing over each other could have had some romantic undertones.

While it clearly isn’t ever going to happen in the canon, this doesn’t mean that fans couldn’t want it to happen or that they can’t enjoy it in fan communities.

Wish Hadn’t: Bellatrix and Voldemort

Bellatrix and Voldemort are definitely one of the Harry Potter couples that left fans confused and filled with disgust. This relationship is only revealed to have happened in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, but this still makes it an extension of the canon.

The fact that Voldemort had a romantic relationship didn’t make sense to a lot of fans, and they felt it was a ridiculous and mostly humorous addition that didn’t feel necessary.
