Although Hollywood has seen young adult adaptations come and go, with some - like The Hunger Games and Twilight - seeing more success than others, the most massively successful is Warner Bros’ Harry Potter franchise. Based on the series of seven novels written by J.K. Rowling that kicked off with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 1997, the film franchise adapted the story of Harry and his friends to the big screen over the course of eight movies. The final Harry Potter novel hit shelves in 2007, with the last movie a few years later in 2011.

The movie franchise starred Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint as the trio of heroes Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. They had plenty of friends and allies among the student body and teaching staff at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, but one fellow pupil was more of a rival/enemy to the kids. Tom Felton portrayed the pureblood Slytherin Draco Malfoy, who was constantly at odds with Harry and his friends. Now, Felton discusses his fondness for Draco.

Felton was interviewed during this weekend’s A Celebration of Harry Potter event at Universal along with fellow Harry Potter stars Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy), Warwick Davis (Filius Flitwick/Griphook), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom). When asked which character he would portray if given the chance to go back and play anyone else, Felton said:

Last year, Warner Bros launched a new film series based in the wizarding world, beginning with the prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Rowling has since announced there will be a total of five movies in the Fantastic Beasts series, with the next set to hit theaters in 2018. Recently, rumors have been circulating that Warner Bros may be interested in another wizarding movie series that would begin with adapting the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - which kicks off from the epilogue in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

I’m too keen on Malfoy. I might go near it when they do the 4D scratch-and-sniff version in 20 years when I get to be an old man. But yeah, no. I’m far too keen on Draco.

The most recent report claimed Warner Bros is aiming to adapt The Cursed Child around 2026, meaning the stars of the original film series would be the right age to reprise their roles - including, presumably, Felton as Malfoy. Based on his answer from the Harry Potter Celebration, it seems the actor would return to the franchise - though the vagueness of his comment makes it unclear whether he’d be willing to return as Malfoy or a different Harry Potter character. Like his co-stars, he has since gone on to pursue a successful acting career, most recently landing a recurring role on CW’s DC Comics series The Flash.

That said, Rowling was quick to shut down the rumors concerning a Cursed Child movie adaptation, and if anyone were to know whether Warner Bros is planning another Harry Potter movie series, she would be it. Of course, Warner Bros may pursue a Cursed Child adaptation at some point down the line, but that remains to be seen. Certainly, fans would hope that if Warner Bros were to ever adapt the play, they would do so at a time when the original film actors are able to reprise their roles - though it’s unclear if they would all be willing to return. Until any official announcements are made, fans can at least rest assured that even after all this time, Felton is still sentimental about his role as Draco Malfoy.
