Hasbro has unveiled a new Black Series figure for Benicio del Toro’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi character, DJ. The Oscar-winning actor is one of three newcomers to the franchise, portraying an enigmatic codebreaker who assists Finn and Rose Tico on their mission to Canto Bight. It has been rumored that DJ could have connections to one Maz Kanata, which is how the Resistance heroes come into contact with such a shady individual. Other than that, not many details are known about DJ, in keeping with Lucasfilm’s penchant for high levels of secrecy.
The studio’s merchandising partners already released the first wave of tie-in products on Force Friday II, and DJ was part of those festivities (receiving his own Funko Pop that provided more clues about his nature). Of course, what hit store shelves in December is hardly the full extent of what toy companies have in store for The Last Jedi, and now Hasbro is teasing the latest addition to their popular Black Series line at New York Comic Con 2017.
On the show floor, the DJ Black Series figure was on display with various other Star Wars products, allowing attendees to get a good look at it. The toy bears much resemblance to the previously revealed 3.75-inch action figure of DJ, wearing the same costume and possessing a nearly identical blaster accessory. One noticeable difference between the two is that the Black Series has more defined facial hair along DJ’s chin, making it a more accurate depiction of del Toro’s appearance. This figure was constructed using Hasbro’s new face-printing technology they are using for the latest Marvel and Star Wars movie-based figures. In addition to DJ, the new product line also includes 6-inch Black Series figures for bounty hunters 4-LOM and Dengar, Lando Calrissian in his Jabba’s palace disguise, and Rey. Hasbro also unveiled a few new 3.75-inch action figures based on The Last Jedi. These are Resistance pilot C’Ai Threnali, Maz Kanata, and a two-pack of Finn in his undercover First Order disguise paired with Captain Phasma. Of these, the Maz figure is arguably the most interesting since it comes with a couple of accessories, such as a blaster. This could mean the wise old alien will take part in some of the action, but toy companies are always known to use some artistic license to spice up their products. Finn being grouped with Phasma implies the two will go head-to-head at some point in Episode VIII, building off their tension in The Force Awakens.
The Black Series figures are always highly coveted amongst collectors, and these should be no different. They truly are state-of-the-art thanks to the new face-mapping technology, resembling the likeness of their respective actors better than any Star Wars toy before. For fans who appreciate that kind of realism in their collectibles, the new Black Series additions will surely sell well.
