If you ask the average fan of comic book movies, or even comic themselves, they’re likely to claim that Marvel and DC Comics are sworn enemies, lifelong opponents in the superhero sphere. And while that may be an exaggeration, one Avenger has made their opinion known: Hawkeye a.k.a. Clint Barton isn’t rushing out to see Joaquin Phoenix’s version of Joker any time soon.
Ordinarily that might not seem like a fact worth commenting on, considering how little time your average Avenger has for… well, anything other than avenging. And the same would apply to Clint’s current mission in the pages of Hawkeye: Freefall. Operating not only as his famous superheroic persona, but as the mysterious new Ronin, as well, Clint barely has time for his new girlfriend, let alone a current box office release. Still, the new reference to DC movies in Marvel’s comic universe shouldn’t be missed by fans. Especially not by those looking to give Clint a piece of their mind for his hot take.
The reference comes in the pages of Hawkeye: Freefall #3Bryce who uncovered Clint’s secret return to Ronin, set shortly after Clint’s big secret was revealed in the previous issue. It was the computer hacker , landing himself a new assignment as ’the man in Hawkeye’s ear,’ supporting his field missions with vital intel. In the case of Hawkeye: Freefall #3, that means educating him on a current movie, in which the protagonist “killed these three guys on the subway. After that, it got all weird.” Admittedly, an instantly recognizable description of Todd Phillips’ Joker. A movie that, according to Clint, “sounds real dumb.”
One could argue that it’s DC who gets the upper hand in this latest exchange of jabs – Clint not too interested in Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar winning Joker performance, while the Justice League explains why the MCU’s Thanos is a moron. We’ll stand by for the next round of cross-universe references, and share them as they arrive. In the meantime, read on below for the full solicitation details for Hawkeye: Freefall #4, in which Clint Barton learns Daredevil is blind… sort of.
