It’s easy to forget just how good some superheroes can be at disguising their real identities. One of the best examples of this is Daredevil, who you would never realize is blind thanks to his incredible senses. Hawkeye just made the realization that Daredevil is in fact blind, but Matt Murdock smartly casts doubt that makes the sharpshooter immediately dismiss the discovery.
Daredevil was blinded after he saved a man from getting hit by a truck carrying radioactive chemicals, which took away his sight permanently. However, the same chemicals granted Daredevil increased senses, meaning that while he can’t see, his other senses were heightened to the point of being superpowers. If you didn’t know Matt Murdock, the man behind the mask, was blind, then you’d have no idea Daredevil couldn’t physically see out of his eyes.
Adventures In Poor Taste got an exclusive first look at Hawkeye: Freefall #4 (out next week) by Matthew Rosenberg, Otto Schmidt, Joe Sabino, and Kim Jacinto, where the archer comes face-to-face with Daredevil. In the series, Hawkeye is back as Ronin and using a time travel device to keep people off his trail. Meanwhile, the villain the Hood continues to kill in search of Ronin - which brings Daredevil to Clint Barton. Daredevil tells Hawkeye (dressed in Ronin attire) to explain why so many dead bodies are popping up, to which Clint responds that it’s all the Hood’s doing in an effort to find Ronin. Daredevil responds “that should be your priority too.”
Hawkeye makes the connection that Daredevil can’t see his Ronin costume and wonders “what the hell is going on right now?” and questions whether he’s being messed with. Clint slowly starts to wonder if Daredevil can’t see out of his mask and then asks himself “is he friggin’ blind?” as he waves his hand in front of his face. Daredevil (using his senses) stops Hawkeye’s hand and asks “why are you doing that?” Clint wonders why Daredevil just stares at him like he’s listening for something. Daredevil tells him of an upcoming meet-up and suggests Hawkeye be there before swinging away.
Clint discovering that Daredevil’s blind is probably the funniest moment of the series so far. It’s a pretty incredible discovery, but Daredevil’s heightened sense allows him to stop Hawkeye’s hand which immediately puts an end to his theory. After all, how could a blind man know someone is waving a hand in his face? Daredevil’s senses know. Hawkeye was close to discovering a huge secret - but Daredevil is simply too good at disguising his true identity.
