HBO has renewed its new anthology series ROOM 104 for a second season. Created by Jay and Mark Duplass, the series first premiered on HBO on July 28, 2017 and is set in a single room of an American hotel following different characters striving for connection who pass through it each episode. The directors include Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, Patrick Brice, Marta Cunningham, Doug Emmett, Megan Griffiths, Dayna Hanson, Chad Hartigan, Ross Partridge, Sarah Adina Smith and So Yong Kim with writers Xan Aranda & Ross Partridge, Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, Mark Duplass, Dayna Hanson, Carson Mell and Ross Partridge.
Similar, yet different than other anthology series like FX’s American Horror Story and American Crime Story and HBO’s True Detective, ROOM 104 follows a different format with different characters, eras and genres like comedy, drama, horror and crime in each episode much along the lines of Netflix’s Black Mirror. So far, the episodes that have aired ‘Ralphie’, ‘Pizza Boy’, ‘The Knockandoo’ and ‘I Knew You Weren’t Dead’ starring actors like Melonie Diaz, James Van Der Beek and Orlando Jones have received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. That would explain why the network is so interested in producing more ROOM 104.
According to a new press release, the series has been renewed for a second season by HBO announced by Amy Gravitt, executive vice president, HBO Programming. Here is what she said about the renewal:
Creators Jay and Mark Duplass are also excited to create more stories and go “further down the rabbit hole” for the second season of the mind bending show. Here is what they said:
“Jay and Mark Duplass are gifted storytellers who have brilliantly reinvented the anthology series for the modern era. The format of ROOM 104 offers endless possibilities and opportunities for new talent to experiment, and I look forward to seeing where the series takes us.”
It comes to no surprise that ROOM 104 is being renewed for a second season, considering the show has received positive reviews from several outlets since it aired. Critics have been impressed with the series’ sense of creativity and adventurousness, giving the anthology series a feeling that anything is possible in the captivating narratives it creates. It’s clear ROOM 104 has left an impression, and it will be interesting to see how the concept continues to evolve as more episodes are made.
“We can’t remember the last time we had so much fun making something. We’re excited to go even further down the rabbit hole with this show.”
There is no official news when the second season will arrive on HBO, but for now fans can continue watching the series from 11:30 p.m.-midnight ET/PT on Fridays until the season finale on October 13.
