Writer and director Guillermo del Toro has explored many genres throughout his career, from horror with his first film, Cronos, to dark fantasy with Pan’s Labyrinth. He also made the jump to comic book adaptations with the supernatural superhero film Hellboy and its sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
For years, fans of del Toro and Hellboy have been waiting for the third film to become a reality, but the film has fallen into a limbo full of ups and downs. Everyone involved, from the cast to the director, have expressed their interest in making the film, with Ron Perlman (Hellboy himself) being the biggest advocate. It seemed like Hellboy 3 was on its way to being greenlit, but Perlman has recently shared it probably won’t be that way.
Perlman’s answer comes as a bigger surprise when we remember that Guillermo del Toro has previously shared that Hellboy 3 would be a go if Pacific Rim 2 is a hit. The sequel to his science-fiction monster vs. giant robot film is on its way, and it’s difficult to imagine it not being a hit – more so after all the support and patience from its fans throughout the film’s tumultuous on-again, off-again production status.
Unfortunately, because Perlman’s statement on Hellboy seemed rather definitive, the actor didn’t have much to add. But don’t think the actor is simply sitting at home, waiting for his “never say never” comment to prove him right. Following his disappointing comments, Perlman went on to talk about his upcoming film Pottersville, the first movie fully financed by his studio-film fund Wing and a Prayer Pictures. Pottersville is a comedy starring Michael Shannon, Christina Hendricks, Judy Greer, Ian McShane, and Thomas Lennon. Perlman says it’s an homage to Frank Capra, and it’s based “on a town which is a little bit down on its luck but maintains a buoyancy and personality through a population of idiosyncratic citizens, though outsourcing has killed the economy.”
