As the next entry in the DC Extended Universe, Justice League, continues production, snippets of character, set and plot details are beginning to emerge. Recent reveals include a shot of Commissioner Gordon next to the Bat Signal, released to celebrate Batman Day, and director Zack Snyder has also unveiled a photo of Batman’s new ’tactical’ Batsuit.
Now a little bit more of the curtain has been pulled back thanks to Henry Cavill and his Instagram account. As part of a Make A Wish campaign, Cavill was on hand to live up to his Superman alter ego and make the days of two children, Orin and Summer. In the process, the British actor also revealed some new promotional artwork of each of the six figures expected to form the core of the Justice League in the upcoming movie.
In addition to the cutouts of the six Justice League members, two beaming kids and a typically heroic looking Cavill, dressed in full Superman gear, the post also included a heartfelt message reading:
“I had the good fortune of meeting some real Superheroes last week. Orin, your strength is exceptional and Summer your support is a rock that is irreplaceable. You are both inspirations to us all! #makeawish”
Whilst audiences will already be fairly familiar with the designs of Superman, Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), the trio of Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) were only shown briefly in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. We’ve since seen more of them in both the Justice League Comic-Con trailer, and The Flash made a brief appearance in Suicide Squad, but it’s still cool to get another look at the design for the characters in Justice League.
The costume designs will likely please many DC fans, managing to be mostly authentic to the comics but with a definitive modern edge that fits naturally into the dark, gritty world that the DCEU has carved out thus far. By now, of course, fans are accustomed to DCEU movies looking spectacular in the build up and marketing stages, only to receive criticism for story and character issues upon release. Many will be hoping that, given Warner Bros. CEO Jeff Bewkes’ recent comments that the movies have “room for improvement”, Snyder and co. will be able to find a balance between strong visual style and effective storytelling in Justice League.
Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters. Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, The Batman solo movie, Dark Universe and Man of Steel 2 are currently without a release dates.
