Back in 2013, it seemed a sequel to Man of Steel was practically a given. The film performed admirably at the box office, received a mostly positive response (even amidst a few critical points of dissension), and promised that the next movie would feature a Superman allowed the chance to be Superman.
However, at Comic-Con in 2013, Warner Bros. announced Batman V Superman - a direct follow-up to Man of Steel, sure, but not one interested in exploring just the next chapter in Superman’s journey. Instead, Batman and Wonder Woman were injected, setting the stage for their forthcoming feature films, as well as cameos for Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg to tease their proper introductions into the DC Extended Universe. That film and the currently in production Justice League aren’t true sequels to Man of Steel, but fans shouldn’t lose hope of there ever being one.
Talk surrounding a proper Man of Steel 2 has intensified as of late, with only last month there being rumors the film was in “active development” and of a “top priority” for Warner Bros. Since then, there’s been more discussion of a solo Harley Quinn movie than of a solo outing for Supes, but in an interview published today from Newsweek, Henry Cavill’s manager, Dany Garcia confirms development on a Man of Steel 2:
Garcia only began managing Cavill’s career recently, but she’s been the force behind Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s skyrocketing career, securing him the gig as highest paid actor of 2016. And she predicts she can do the same for Cavill, which certainly seems plausible given her track record and the future DCEU films Cavill is set to appear in. Plus, don’t be fooled by Cavill’s serious Superman, he can be affable and charming when asked (see The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), so he has the chops to cross over from Hollywood actor to Movie Star.
“Henry has a big appetite. We’ve been in a five-month period of time where he’s re-strategizing, acquiring property [for his production company Promethean], he’s filming [Justice League] now, he’s in development for the Superman standalone… he’s beginning to expand that world. It’s beautifully teed up. In a year from now, or two years from now, he’s going to be a force globally.”
And what would certainly help on that path towards stardom and raking in The Rock-level money would be a smash hit Superman movie free of controversy and overwhelming criticism. To be fair, that’s probably asking too much of Man of Steel 2 (or any film), but Cavill’s career would benefit from a Superman film that excites more than it divides its intended audience.

Wonder Woman opens on June 2, 2017; Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, the Batman solo movie and Man of Steel 2 are currently without release dates.
