It’s been nine years since Henry Cavill was cast as Superman, and a lot of things have happened in DC’s movie universe ever since. Unofficially titled DC Extended Universe, it began in 2013 with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, which saw Cavill in full Superman mode for the first time, in a story that was much darker than previous Superman films. The film was followed by the highly anticipated big screen Batman/Superman crossover Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which introduced Ben Affleck as the new Dark Knight. Cavill reprised his role as Clark Kent/Superman one more time in Justice League in 2017 – and that’s where trouble began.
Justice League had a complicated production process, with Zack Snyder stepping down for personal reasons and Joss Whedon taking over and overseeing the remainder of post-production, including additional scenes that were directed and written by him. The result was a film that felt messy, and not even its main cast could save it. The underperformance of Justice League prompted Warner to make some major changes to the DCEU, and these ended up affecting Henry Cavill’s future as Superman.
Back in September 2018, it was reported that Henry Cavill had left DC’s universe after talks broke down for further appearances and the studio was reportedly focusing on a solo Supergirl film rather than another Superman adventure. However, this was never actually confirmed, and Cavill has since shared he hasn’t given up the role and still wants a proper Man of Steel sequel (because Dawn of Justice is more a Batman film than a Superman one). So, what does the future hold for Cavill’s Superman in the DCEU?
Henry Cavill’s Superman Future Is Unclear… For Now.
Henry Cavill is reportedly under contract to reprise his role as Superman in one more film, but Warner doesn’t have plans for a new Man of Steel film in the foreseeable future. According to a report released in November 2019, Warner has been approaching “lots of high-profile talent” to help boost Superman and make him relevant again, which doesn’t necessarily mean that Cavill will continue playing the role. Among those Warner has talked to are J.J. Abrams and Michael B. Jordan, with the latter pitching his vision for the character.
As mentioned above, Warner’s schedule doesn’t include a new Superman film. Instead, the studio is focusing on giving characters like Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn (through Birds of Prey) their own space, while continuing exploring the worlds of Shazam and Aquaman, finally introducing Black Adam, and giving new life to the Suicide Squad and Batman. As for Henry Cavill, he’s currently enjoying the success of The Witcher, in which he plays the main role. Though The Witcher has already been renewed for a second season, Cavill has already said that this wouldn’t prevent him from returning as Superman… if it happens. The Witcher is the only project he currently has, as he’s already done filming Enola Holmes, and unless he and Warner confirm his time as Superman is over, there’s still hope for him to return to the DCEU, though not as soon as some might want.
