The final lineup of games for the Sega Genesis Mini has been revealed and it has more games than originally promised, as the system will ship with 42 pre-loaded games.

The Sega Genesis Mini is Sega’s answer to Nintendo’s popular line of Mini retro consoles, with the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo systems taking the market by the storm. Sega decided to wait and not rush a retro console out of the door, unlike Sony and the PlayStation Classic, which faltered in the market due to its lack of features and poor selection of games. It seems that the wait has paid off, as the Sega Genesis Mini is shipping with 42 games, most of which can be ranked among the best games on the system.

The official Sega Genesis Mini website now has every game available for the system listed. The game will ship with the following pre-loaded titles:

  • Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle Alisia Dragoon Altered Beast Beyond Oasis Castle of Illusions Starring Mickey Mouse Castlevania: Bloodlines Columns Comix Zone Contra: Hard Corps Darius Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine Dynamite Headdy Earthworm Jim Ecco the Dolphin Eternal Champions Ghouls ’n Ghosts Golden Axe Gunstar Heroes Kid Chameleon Landstalker Light Crusader Mega Man: The Wily Wars Monster World IV Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millennium Road Rash II Shining Force  Shinobi 3 Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball Space Harrier 2 Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition Streets of Rage 2 Strider  Super Fantasy Zone Tetris ToeJam & Earl Thunder Force 3 Vectorman Virtua Fighter 2 Wonder Boy in Monster World World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck

There are two very interesting names on that list. Darius is actually a brand new port of the classic arcade shooter for the system, and will be on a single-screen rather than the triple-screen action that characterized its stay in arcade cabinets. Tetris was planned to be released for the Sega Genesis, but numerous legal issues halted the release, leading to a handful of copies making their way into the wild and becoming the rarest games in the Sega Genesis’ library. The Tetris legal issues have long since been resolved, so there is nothing preventing the game from appearing on the Sega Genesis Mini, although the original copies, worth millions, are still collector’s items.

There are a few notable absentees in the library of the Sega Genesis Mini, such as Shining Force 2 and the remaining Sonic the Hedgehog games, but the current roster of titles is still incredible. The only major sticking point is the fact that the two controllers that come with the console only have three buttons each, which means that it will be difficult to play the fighting games on the Sega Genesis Mini without resorting to third-party controllers. With all of that being said, the Sega Genesis Mini still has a stacked roster of amazing games.
